Theatre Bizzare: The Greatest Masquerade on Earth

In just a few short weeks, Theatre Bizzare - The Greatest Masquerade on Earth comes back to Detroit. This is my favorite event of the year, since it combines everything I love - makeup, dress-up and a fun night out with my fella.

Theatre Bizarre started in Detroit as an (illegal) outdoor, backyard party with local live music, circus acts and carnival themed games and oddities. It has now morphed and grown into a huge affair attended by thousands of marauding masqueraders, creating, truly, THE Greatest Masquerade on Earth.

Housed in Detroit's stunning, historic Masonic Temple, it is an absolutely decadent, indulgent and insanely magical event. Room after room is filled with acts and elaborate decor to delight, repulse and genuinely scare the crap out of you.

But the best part is the costumes. Costumes are mandatory to attend and do not disappoint. Attendees spend weeks preparing elaborately beautiful, horrifyingly scary and incredibly hilarious get-ups. The magic and creativity of the costuming coupled with the surreal venue surroundings create an intoxicating atmosphere - and one that goes into the wee hours of the morning.

My husband and I are currently planning our costumes for this year and are leaning toward a campy/historical/horror angle. Stay tuned for more on that...

Here are a few images from our costumes from the last few years...
